Over the last couple of weeks we've been out of the office filming companies around Memphis for the 5th annual Small Business Awards, produced by the Memphis Business Journal. This project has taken us from the gorgeous showrooms of Artisent Floors to the bustling room full of energetic kids at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Memphis, and everywhere in between.
Since the awards' inception almost five years ago, we've had the great privilege of working with the fine folks at the Memphis Business Journal to honor the financial gurus who keep companies running smoothly. we've learned a thing or two throughout that time, and are delighted to share some of those experiences....
CFOs are anything BUT bean counters and number crunchers
While we filmed sixteen different CFOs working in organizations with anywhere from 10 to 10,000 employees, each confessed that their role has changed drastically during their tenure. While financial management definitely plays a daily role in the life of the CFO, many expressed that they also handle operational and HR tasks to keep their organizations running smoothly. Often times the CFO, having an intimate knowledge of the financials and abilities of a business, can recommend strategies and predictions for the upcoming year better than anyone else in the organization.
Consistency is Key
Building a strong organization takes a lot of time, patience and commitment, and no one knows that better than our CFOs. Since the women and men who operate the financial sides of the businesses have to look both ahead and behind to accurately create financial projections about their companies, they are able to maintain a steady and balanced view of their organization's performance over the duration of years. In a fast-paced work environment leaders can often get stuck bouncing around from task to task and miss the larger picture that CFOs are able to see through careful scrutiny of budgets and other records. We learned that every organization needs a steady, consistent and enduring leader to remind their colleagues where they've been and where they can go.
During that time, our filming has taken us from the corporate boardroom of Fortune 100 companies to non profits working on the streets of Memphis. This year, we have the distinct privilege of filming 17 nominees and 4 sponsors. Each nominee will be showcased in 2-3 minute videos, and debut at the awards ceremony on October 23rd at the Holiday Inn.
Keep an eye out for these wise words and insightful advice from our nominees after October 23rd, when we'll have a little montage of our favorite shots from the awards!
