Legendary funk/R&B group The Bar Kays have been getting down and grooving audiences for the last 50 years. Over that time they have amassed an impressive collection of titles that include 20 top singles, 5 gold albums and 30 albums. Their story began in Memphis (much like ours!) and has made its way around the World and back again. To say that we felt a little pressure would be the understatement of the year...
For the Bar Kays' 50th anniversary concert, we were tasked with producing a series of engaging, vibrant visuals that would re-imagine some of the group's most notable moments since 1964. Through a combination of 3D, live action, 2D and motion graphics stretched our imaginations and challenged us to re-imagine famous scenes like the tragic crash of Otis Redding's plane in 1968, to their unforgettable performance at Wattstax in 1972. In the end we gained an incredible attachment to the Bar Kays, their music and the ways in which they influenced popular culture. We were also very fortunate to work with the wonderful representatives of LaMarie's Entertainment Complex to acquire all Bar Kays original footage and artifacts. Below are some sketches, behind-the-scenes shots and stills from our production to offer an insight into the extensiveness of the project over a 3-month period.
